> Cursus of Planetology Ile de France > Objectives



Planetology has rapidly grown these last years, with the development of new links between specialists in Earth Science, environment and astrophysics. These links have been established on the basis of cooperations relying on great space programs. Tools for modelling the atmosphere and the interior of the Earth have been adapted to other planets, allowing to improve our understanding of the non-terrestrial systems, and in this way, to better understand how works the "Earth engine". The thematics linked to the origin of the Earth and of the solar system, and the question of the emergence of life, have also significantly contributed to create new links and to reinforce the previous ones between planetologs and astrophysicists. The recent discovery of numerous planets around other stars opens new perspectives for planetology.

Numerous space missions of the European Space Agency and of NASA (Mars-Express, Cassini-Huygens, Venus-Express, Rosetta, Mars Exploration Rovers, Mars reconnaissance Orbiter, …) will soon provide a wide set of data, allowing us to progress in the understanding of our origin, and in the comaprative study of the Earth and the planets. The DARWIN mission to seek for extrasolar planets and eventual associated biosignatures will allow to extend this field to other planetary systems.


Knowledge of the scientific bases to understand the Earth and the planetary systems : propagation of the electromagnetic radiation, radiation-matter interaction, radiative transfer, neutral and ionised fluids dynamic, wave mecanic in gaseous and solid media (meteorology, sismology), isotopic datation methods, etc.

Application of these basic concepts to the understanding of the planetary media, in their diversity, with Earth as the reference, with a comparative planetology point of view devoted to improve the understanding of the mechanisms which control our own planet (global warming, stratospheric physical-chemistry and lack of ozone, paleoclimates…).

Learning of the concepts related to space instrumentation onboard space probes to observe the Earth and planets, by teledetection (electromanetic probing, active and passive) and in situ measurements (mass spectrometry, gas chromatography,…).

Multidisciplinary culture, both scientific and instrumental, open on the domains linked to planetology : environment, Eart sciences, astrophysics.


After the cursus of Planetology, students will have the possibility to apply for the following positions : researcher and professor in the field of Planetolgy bur also in Environment (remote sensing, climate change, large scale data base…), Earth sciences (sismology, geochemistry, …), astrophysics ; manager in space agency (project manager, …), space industry (ingeneer, software development, …),….
